Randy Nelson

Randy Nelson grew up on a small farm in Southern Minnesota as one of six children. He had a great childhood and worked his way through Engineering School at Iowa State University. In 1993, Randy founded VFS Fire & Security Services, growing the company from a single employee to a thriving team of 185. His dedication to honesty and integrity laid the foundation for the company’s success.

Company culture is paramount to Randy, and he has cultivated an environment that promotes high-quality, balanced lives for all team members. His efforts have not only created jobs and opportunities but also established a remarkable and supportive workplace culture.

Randy’s willingness to embrace new and bold ventures is evident in the leaders he has chosen to support his vision. His commitment to holistic success is reflected in his favorite sayings: “Time kills all deals,” and “Procrastination of a good idea or opportunity will eventually dissipate into nothing, but an average idea executed well is infinitely better than the best idea in the world never implemented at all.”

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Randy is a man of many talents and hobbies. He cherishes time with his family, traveling, enjoying great food, and curating his sommelier-level wine collection. He also loves cycling in Europe and, most recently, has taken up playing the ukulele, a hobby that pairs perfectly with a Hawaiian print shirt! To Randy, time is the most precious resource, and he values spending it with his family.

As Randy looks to the future, he aims to continue building on the values that have driven his success, ensuring that VFS Fire & Security Services remains a place where employees thrive and innovation flourishes.

Henry Fontana

Henry Fontana boasts over 25 years of experience in the fire protection industry. Starting his career as a field technician, Henry gained invaluable, hands-on experience, understanding the intricacies and challenges faced on the ground. As he advanced to roles such as designer and project manager, he not only honed his technical skills but also developed a comprehensive understanding of project dynamics, client needs, and industry standards. 

Throughout his career, Henry has been committed to continuous learning and professional development, earning numerous NICET certificates that underscore his expertise and dedication to the field. His extensive knowledge and experience enable him to design and manage fire protection systems that are not only compliant with the latest regulations but also tailored to the specific needs of each client. 

Henry’s leadership style is characterized by his commitment to excellence, collaboration, and innovation. His vision for the future is grounded in a deep understanding of the industry’s past and present, combined with a forward-thinking approach that embraces new technologies and methodologies. 

Henry is passionate about mentoring the next generation of fire protection professionals. He actively teaches NFPA hands-on training, sharing his wealth of knowledge and practical insights with those entering the field. His dedication to education ensures that the industry continues to evolve with skilled and knowledgeable practitioners who are well-prepared to uphold the highest standards of fire safety. 

VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES

Mario Lopez

Mario Lopez has been a leader in the fire protection industry for over 30 years, beginning his career as a fire protection designer in 1989. His extensive journey has seen him excel in various roles including estimating, project management, sales, and general sales management, ultimately leading him to his current role as Vice President of Sales. 

Mario’s work ethic, integrity, and humility were shaped by his parents, both immigrants who successfully ran their own businesses for over 30 years. Their pursuit of the American dream profoundly influenced Mario, instilling in him values that he carries both in his professional and personal life. 

Here are a few fun facts about Mario: He loves golfing on Sundays and is an artist at heart, often found at his kitchen table at 2 AM drawing beautiful portraits of his daughters. A skilled saxophonist, Mario plays in the family band and recently discovered a new passion for playing the guitar. When he’s not making music, his primary focus is his two daughters, whom he hopes to raise with the same integrity and mentorship he values. 

Mario lives by the quote, “The heart and soul of the company is creativity and innovation,” incorporating this philosophy into the daily rhythm of his department. With a purposeful vision, strategic planning, and unwavering integrity, he mentors and supports his team while continually seeking new opportunities and innovative ways to expand our business outreach.
