Apprenticeships: A Pathway to a Secure Career and Quality Assurance

Fire safety systems are essential for preserving life and property, requiring extensive training for the installation and maintenance of fire sprinklers, alarms, and extinguishers.

Pedro Zamudio, a fire sprinkler pipefitter apprentice at VFS Fire & Security (a Fortis Brand), transitioned from working as a busboy and waiter to fire safety eight years ago. He pursued fire tech courses and joined VFS Fire & Security, appreciating the hands-on work and the camaraderie with colleagues.

Zamudio finds purpose in his work, knowing it can potentially save lives or protect property. Due to the technical and vital nature of fire safety, apprenticeships are often required for career advancement. In California, the California American Fire Sprinkler Association (CAFSA) oversees the coursework and testing for apprentices, with a four-year program that includes both theoretical studies and on-the-job training.

Zamudio’s apprenticeship involved virtual and in-person classes, with the coursework nearing completion by June and on-the-job hours by October. He will then take a journeyman test to advance his career further.
